Community Colleges - Doing What Matters for Jobs and the Economy, Strong Workforce Initiatives and other Grants through the Community College System Goals: supply in-demand skills for employers

Under Doing What Matters, the Inland Empire/Desert Consortium aligned a majority of their curriculum development for industry sectors with those targeted industries identified by the Riverside County Workforce Development Board. An acronym to remember is MULCH: Manufacturing, Utilities and renewable energy, Logistics, Construction and Healthcare • Riverside and San Bernardino Counties have participated in the Inland Empire/Desert Consortium (12 community colleges of the IE) Retreat since 2008 to collaborate and work on developing training programs to meet industry needs Riverside Workforce Development staff have worked with the Deputy Sector Navigators DSN’s as part of Doing What Matters • Worked with the Deputy Sector Navigator for Advanced Transportation and Renewable Energy in creating Green Pathways = Green Paydays. College of the Desert has incorporated this training as a regular offering • Workedwith the DSN for Healthcare on developing several entry-level and incumbent worker healthcare training • Under Slingshot, Mt. San Jacinto Community College (MSJC) was a training provider for a Medical Assistant/Scribe training that was successful California took a bold step in 2016 to create one millionmore middle-skill workers. At the recommendation of the California Community College Board of Governors, the Governor and Legislature approved the StrongWorkforce Program, adding a new annual recurring investment of $200 million to spur career technical education (CTE) in the nation’s largest workforce development system of 114 colleges. Some of the funded Strong Workforce projects that Riverside County Workforce is collaborating includes; • LAUNCH exists to remove the obstacles faced by education and industry partners using the apprenticeship model and to present a ready-made product that employers and students can engage today. There are 9 colleges participating with Norco College as the lead. • The Building and Energy SystemSpecialist (BESP) Consortia project is a response to the Energy Efficiency industry facing serious shortfalls in developing a skilled, trained, and available labor pool. The BESP project responds to sector employer’s needs for a trained and employment ready workforce. There are 7 colleges participating with College of the Desert (COD) as the lead. COD provided a letter of support to utilize the BESP training in planning for the Prison to Employment Planning grant. • The purpose of the sub-regional business incubator andmakerspace project is three-fold: 1) to help budding businesses gain the tools needed to start a business, develop their product concepts, and survive for more than five years; 2) to teach students about entrepreneurship, the product development process, and design thinking; and 3) to expose more of our community to STEM career pathways which will support industry needs. There are 9 colleges participating with Victor Valley as the lead Feasibility Study for Tractor Trailer Operator — The heavy and tractor-trailer trailer truck driver occupation continues to grow, with an anticipated 3,278 new job openings between 2015 and 2020 (excluding replacement jobs for those leaving the workforce). Currently, the statewide marketplace for occupational training in this area appears to belong primarily to for-profit and/or private driving schools. Further, it appears that very few, if any, community colleges within the California Community College system offer commercial driving, bus driving, or tractor-trailer operator certificate programs. This provides an exceptional opportunity for the region to meet local and statewide demand through the offering of an industry recognized credential at an affordable cost to students. The study is being done by Copper Mountain College.
