Michael Barrera , 23, enrolled in theWIOA program as a high school dropout looking to earn his HI SET along with getting paid work experience. WhenMichael first began the program he was considered basic skills deficient. Michael was co-enrolled both into theWIOA and Youth Build Plus programs. Michael began his education pathway to complete his secondary education requirements. Through hard work and dedication, he was able to pass all his exams and earn his HI SET certificate. Michael participated in the Youth Build Plus paid work experience with the construction cohort. He eventually earned his HBI Construction certification, completed his pre-employment classes and improved his basic skills. He then took the skills he developed and put them to use by gaining employment in the Construction Industry as a framer for GDT Framing.

MylenishaWilson enrolled inWIOA as a high school dropout and was determined to earn her High School Diploma. Mylenisha participated in the Logistics pathway, which allowed her to work on her education goal and learn about the Logistics Industry. Mylenisha successfully completed the program and earned her CLA (Certified Logistics Associate) certification, which helped her get a job at the FallasWarehouse. Mylenisha also won the Golden Barcode Award which goes to the participant that best exemplifies leadership, a strong work ethic and responsibility. However, her biggest accomplishment came when she received her High School Diploma and was able to celebrate by walking at graduation in cap and gown to receive her Diploma. Mylenisha has continued to work at Fallas since graduating and attends Mt. San Jacinto College with plans to enter the nursing program. Mylenisha is a very determined individual with a good work ethic and a positive outlook on life.

Angel Giron came to the WIOA program as a high school dropout with very few high school credits and a goal of joining the US ARMY. Angel co-enrolled in the Youth Build Plus Program and joined the Construction cohort. Angel worked tirelessly withWIOA staff to prepare for his Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) in addition to working on improving his basic skills and prepping for the HI Set. Angel’s efforts were rewarded when he successfully passed the HI Set Exam and earned a passing score on the ASVAB. Despite the personal barriers Angel faced along the way, he persevered and accomplished his goal of entering the US ARMY. Angel is currently stationed in Colorado and while on leave, returned to WIOA to thank staff for helping him reach his goal of becoming a soldier. Not only did Angel improve his basic skills, learn a new trade, earn his high school equivalency credential, and join the army, he has also developed into a leader and role model.
