Youth in Government Day – Western County The 19 th Annual Youth in Government Day took place on Thursday, October 19 th, 2017. During this event, students are paired with county employees based on their interests and career aspirations. The students shadow the county employee and get to see first hand what a day in the life of a county employee such as a District Attorney or Probation Officer is like. This allows them to see if their career interests are right for themand expose them to other career paths they may not have previously considered. Over 80 employees volunteered to be mentors for the 19 th Annual Youth in Government Day. The morning started off with a brief presentation fromShondi Miller with the Riverside County Human Resources’ Educational Support Program. Shondi assisted the intern team with the pairings of the mentors and mentees. Each student completes the online Strong Interest Survey which analyzes their interests and skills to determine a career path that would be best suited for them. Shondi discussed the importance of finding a career one loves which was very informative and encouraging to the participants. 3rd District Supervisor and Board Chairman Chuck Washington, welcomed and thanked the mentors for their participation, encouraging the students to take advantage of the opportunity..! Students and mentors were then paired to begin their day of job shadowing. Evaluations collected at the end of the day revealed that participants gained insight on the workings of public government and felt closer to discovering their career aspirations.
