Youth Ecology Program The Youth Ecology Program is a program that is coordinated between the local Water District, Eastern Municipal Water District, (EMWD) and California Family Life Center (CFLC) Youth Opportunity Center where the youth learn about the Water Industry and employment opportunities in that field. Youth Ecology Programs are workforce training and ecosystems education aimed at employing youth and young adults while teaching environmental stewardship. There are currently three sessions and they are all 12 weeks long: Summer, Spring andWinter. The Youth Opportunity Center prepares participants for the EMWD interview with courses such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Keyboarding and Professional Development. EMWD provides a job description for each position along with tasks and duties assigned by each of the department heads. They also coordinate with the Youth Opportunity Center concerning skills they would like to see the youth have. Youth Commission On January 6, 1998, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the formation of a county wide Youth Commission to advise the Board of Supervisors on issues relevant to youth in the County. In order to have more accurate representation from all areas of the county, the Board created five (5) Youth Advisory Councils to represent each of the 5 Supervisorial Districts. The 5 Commissioners from each Youth Advisory Council make up the Youth Commission Board which meets bi-monthly to discuss upcoming projects and events and to provide recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on youth related issues. The Youth Commission acts as an advisory board to the Board of Supervisors and works closely with the Youth Commission to better understand and respond to the needs of today’s youth. Additionally, the Youth Commission focuses on anticipating the educational, recreational and cultural needs of youth by working together to host meaningful events to benefit youth. The Commission strives to improve the quality of life of all young people in the County of Riverside. The Youth Commission sponsored events are the Youth Retreat, the Youth in Government Day and the Youth Summit.
