is second in the nation in graduating students with technical degrees behind New York and it is first in the nation in graduating technical PhDs. Riverside County offers Amazon the ability to immediately staff its new headquarters in a culturally vibrant and affordable location while drawing froman ethnically diverse, highly skilled talent pool in Southern California. In 2016, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties’ (known locally as the “Inland Empire” or IE) universities granted nearly 650 undergraduate degrees in Engineering/ Computer Science, a subset of 6,500 such degrees earned at all public Southern California universities. In addition to education, universities classified as “R1: Doctoral Universities—Highest Research Activity” (R1) in Southern California now spend nearly than $4 billion each year on research. The potential for Amazon to partner with universities for talent recruitment, internships, and sponsored research is virtually limitless. Within 95miles of the Inland Empire, Amazon HQ2 would have access to universities conducting nearly $4 billion annually in research and development, more than 321,873 undergraduates, andmore than 80,394 graduate students.
